I think it does gradually darken your skin, but leaves a hint of orange tint. I thought the smell and consistency were great...at first. Within a 1/2 hour after applying, my skin began to stink like other Neutrogena self-tanners. The smell is so strong that it leaves the odor lingering in the clothes I put on immediately after. I just purchased "Bain de Soleil" streak guarde and it works much better, leaves a nice color, and the scent it much more bearable. No more Neutrogena for me.

The color change is gradual (hence, the 'build a tan' name), the consistency is like a nice creamy body lotion, and it smells pleasant. In conjunction with this product I also recommend using St. Tropez Self Tanner remover for the palms of your hands. This is a keeper!

The color is noticeable; I used about five applications to get really dark. It's great for winter when you don't want to look extremely dark or deathly white. It's very hard to screw up; I used it on my feet and face with perfect results. I would definitely recommend this to everybody.
