I really like this product, especially the travel size that does not require salt. This is my third unit, only because I have one for work and one for home. The home unit finally died but only after a few years of use. I agree, you need to dump out the water and dry out the unit to keep it running properly. Also, cleaning it with vinegar helps. And, using disitilled water helps, too. If you have a dehumidifier in your home, you can use that water for your Caruso hair setter and your iron. As mentioned previously, however, the original sponge rollers were the best. Now, these cell foam rollers don't work as well, but even these rollers give me a curl like nothing else could. I, too, agree Caruso should just sell the unit without rollers. I'll never not have one of these products. My hair looks its best when I use my Caruso.

I love the results I get with the Caruso steam hairsetter. It heats up in seconds, the curlers are easy to use, and the curls set in your hair in no time at all. There's only one problem - I can't get a unit to last for very long. And it's kind of frustrating when you're in the middle of doing your hair and it just dies. Because of how great my hair turns out, I would be more than willing to buy replacement units a couple of times a year. I don't need more curlers, just the unit. They need to sell it separately.
I have owned this Caruso steam setter for many years and I absolutely love it. It is a healthy way to set your hair and does not create damage to the hair.
I am reading a lot of reviews here and on other sites about "oh my unit just broke down, this is the fourth time this happens to me...." My advice: like in a coffee maker, the inside of the steaming unit has a metal heat element which calcifies over time. Depending on the amount of minerals in the water where you live, this calcification can happen faster for some people, slower for others. Solution: cleaning maintenance with vinegar! I open the bottom of the unit (6 small screws, easy to do) and brush the heating element with white vinegar and an old toothbrush. The first time I did this after one year of twice-weekly use I was amazed at the amount of white powdery built-up that came off. So my unit keeps going strong even though it is years old. I have traveld to Italy with it and used a cheap adapter and it worked perfect and kept working perfect after I returned home.
So for all the people that complain about the Caruso's being cheaply made - maybe your unit just needed a bit of maintenance and cleaning.
If you do not want to open the heating unit for cleaning, I suggest running your Caruso with 2 tablespoons of white vinegar added to the water for a long steam cycle every 20 uses or so. This should also keep calcifications in check.
One more thing: if you have not used a steam hairsetter before and if after the first time of using the unit you are ready to throw in the towel because you feel it is just too difficult - don't give up! Keep using it and you will get very good at it. You will be able to set your hair at lightening speed soon.
I have used these Caruso hair setters for at least 20 years and have noticed that the quality has definitely improved. You do need to run it with water and a little vinegar about once a month to keep it in good shape. Setting my hair with these steam rollers keeps it from getting all dried out and frizzy. Definitely worth it!
I had posted a very positive review when I first received this item. It heated up pretty good and though it wasn't as great as the first Caruso steamer I had, I figured it was me. After all this time (I have had it nearly year), No, this is not the product I thought it was and I want to be honest. First of all, the product I received did not look like the picture shown , it is gray and black. like a tin can made of plastic. Secondly, the steamer is SO SLOW to heat each roller and it is because of this tiny little wave of steam that is flowing up through the roller, The roller never really gets hot, just sort of warm and you wait forever for that each one, Took me nearly 20 minutes to roll my hair, it used to take 6 minutes with the Old Caruso steamer (that I have thrown away, regret regret) Your style falls out within no time because the amount of steam is just not sufficient to hold. I am searching for steam rollers today. Sigh, I hate it but this is just not a good product anymore
I got this set after seeing amazing results from other women using it. Unfortunately, for years I failed to get a decent result. The curl sets very quick, so it's easy to error by leaving them on the steam too long. That's not really my issue with it. Steam may be gentle but it is not for women with frizzy hair. My hair frizzes a lot in the summer, it is wavy and thin. These rollers create a messy looking result every time, and because the curl sets so well I wind up looking crazy until I wash my hair again.
I've been using this product for over 20 years. The original rollers lasted much longer than this new type. Would prefer to be able to purchase just the heating unit separately.
All of these Robert Caruso steam rollers are fabulous. They take up little room and they don't damage your hair. I bought one of these in the 80's, loved the way it curled my hair and the long lasting look, used it for years. I have fine straight hair which is hard to curl. Put it away a decade ago when a hairstylist friend gave me a professional curling iron. After using it for years (along with coloring my hair), I noticed my hair just looked horrible: dry broken, lifeless. Realized I was burning it and tossed the iron, pulling back out my old faithful. Loved the results but noticed the rollers were disintegrating after decades of sitting. So I bought a new one. Basically the same design, a little smaller, but that works for me; great to travel with, takes up very little room
I haven't been able to find anything I like as much as this since I discovered it back in the early 90s. I have been through about 4 or 5 of these over the past 20 years so I guess that's pretty good compared to what most people go through. I use it almost every day too. I am buying one today as a replacement because I can tell mine is getting ready to go. It normally heats up very fast but the one I have is taking a long time to steam so it's on the way out. I've been using this one for about 4 years. Much easier than a curling iron and for me a flat iron is worthless. This can smooth out my hair without making it curly or it can make it curly. I normally use it to put in a loose wave and it is so easy and fast. Love it. You know what I don't understand though, is none of my hairdressers over the past 20 years have known what this is and I'd like to know why not?
Soft foam rollers are infused with gentle steamed moisture.
Hair is then wrapped on the infused roller and covered with a shield.
Patented roller and shield design creates even moisture penetration and allows airflow for quick evaporation, or speed the process with a hair dryer.
Gentle moisture penetrates to the hair's molecular core allowing it to relax and bend.
As moisture evaporates, hair is "set" in curled position.
The molecular hold is so strong, it can only be released by shampooing. Because there is not damaging heat, you can use the Caruso Professional® system as often as you like.
