Q: How fast can a puffin fly?
A: A puffin can fly 48 to 55 mph (77 to 88 km/hr).  The puffin beats its wings rapidly to achieve this amazing speed, reaching up to 400 beats a minute.

Q: How long can a puffin stay under water?
A: A puffin can dive for up to a minute but most dives usually last 20 to 30 seconds.

The cutest member of the Auk family of sea birds was named for the silly way it puffs out its chest when it walks.  By 1885, Puffins were nearly extinct in Maine.  In 1973, Audubon's Project Puffin began reintroducing them to their native habitat, a tiny island known as Eastern Egg Rock.  They brought puffin chicks from Newfoundland, Canada's thriving population.
