 | What are the side effects of Provigil?
|
| Provigil (generic name modafinil) is a prescription medicine used to treat people who have narcolepsy, a condition that causes frequent and uncontrollable daytime sleepiness. It also reduces yawning and is indicated to improve wakefulness in people with other sleep disorders such as sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome, and shift work sleep disorder. The most commonly reported side effects of Provigil include headaches, nausea, nervousness, diarrhea, dry mouth, rhinitis, back pain, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping at night. Similar stimulant-type medications such as Ritalin (methylphenidate) and Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine), have been associated with dependence when taken without a physician’s directions. While there are no reports of physical or psychological dependence with Provigil, the risk of dependence isn’t well studied. If you have high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, or kidney disease, you may need a lower dose of Provigil. Sources: Micromedex® Healthcare Series. Thomson Micromedex, 2006.
