WALA carefully selects each plant ingredient to activate the skin’s own healing processes rather than supplant or suppress them. Much of the expertise and the science behind the Hauschka brand originated with the work of Austrian chemist Dr. Rudolf Hauschka (1891-1969). In the 1920s and 30s, pharmacists and physicians used alcohol in the plant extraction process. Hauschka was concerned that alcohol stripped some of the healing properties of the living plant. He experimented with an alternative extraction process, submerging rose petals in water and exposing them to the rhythmic polarities they experienced while part of the living plant: warm/cold, light/dark, motion/stillness. The result was a water-based extract that remained stable for decades. Recognizing the vast potential of this rhythmic processing method, Hauschka and his associates founded WALA, a pharmaceutical company, in 1935.
