Chemical Name: MEPERIDINE (me-PER-i-deen)
Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml is a narcotic analgesic used to treat or prevent moderate to severe pain. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml if you are also taking ritonavir or a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking a phenothiazine. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of kidney failure or other kidney conditions. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml.
Follow the directions for using Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml provided by your doctor. TAKE EACH DOSE in one-half glass of water. STORE MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml at room temperature, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml and you are using it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT TAKE MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to meperidine (such as Demerol, Mepergan). A severe allergic reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml or if a certain medicine contains meperidine, contact your doctor or pharmacist. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml for longer than recommended by your doctor. Exceeding the recommended dose or taking Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml for longer than prescribed may be habit-forming. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL SURGERY OR EMERGENCY TREATMENT, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml. AVOID ALCOHOL while you are using Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml. Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml. Using Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Caution should be used in the elderly since they may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml during pregnancy. MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml include drowsiness, dizziness, flushing, lightheadedness, sweating, weakness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, or constipation. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances, difficulty urinating, or mental or mood changes. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience confusion; hallucinations; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness or drowsiness; severe or persistent headache or vomiting; or shallow, slowed, or difficult breathing. An allergic reaction to Meperidine Hcl 50mg/5ml is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include cold and clammy skin; coma; slow, shallow, or difficult breathing; severe dizziness, drowsiness, or lightheadedness; muscle weakness; pinpoint pupils; and slow heartbeat.
DO NOT SHARE MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml for other health conditions. KEEP MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml out of the reach of children and pets. IF USING MEPERIDINE HCL 50mg/5ml FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
