Chemical Name: FENOFIBRATE (fen-oh-FYE-brate)

Common uses
This medicine is a lipid-lowering agent used for controlling high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. It is used in combination with a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat.

Before using
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (eg, simvastatin), anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), sulfonylureas (eg, glipizide), immunosuppressants (eg, cyclosporine) or other medicines that may harm the kidney (eg, aminoglycoside antibiotics [eg, gentamicin], amphotericin B, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs] [eg, ibuprofen], tacrolimus, vancomycin). DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including diabetes; underactive thyroid; heart blood vessel problems; gallstones; kidney problems; certain muscle problems (myopathy); a history of pancreatitis or blood clots in your veins (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism); allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are very overweight, have an inactive lifestyle, drink large amounts of alcohol; or if you are taking a beta-blocker (eg, propranolol), estrogen, or thiazide diuretic (eg, hydrochlorothiazide). USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have gallbladder problems, liver problems (including cirrhosis), severe kidney problems, or if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.

Directions
Follow the directions for taking this medicine provided by your doctor. SWALLOW WHOLE. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing. DO NOT TAKE chipped or broken tablets. SOME BRANDS OF THIS MEDICINE SHOULD BE TAKEN WITH FOOD. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR BRAND, ask your pharmacist. DO NOT TAKE A BILE ACID-BINDING RESIN (eg, cholestyramine) within 4 to 6 hours before or 1 hour after taking this medicine. Check with your doctor if you have any questions. STORE THIS MEDICINE between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly-closed container away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.

Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver function, kidney function, blood cholesterol, and other blood tests, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. This medicine may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. AVOID ALCOHOL while you are using this medicine. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE without checking with your doctor. Report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor right away, especially if you also have a fever or general body discomfort. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINES, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include headache, or nausea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience calf pain; chest pain; confusion; increased coughing or coughing up blood; dark urine; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (with or without fever and fatigue); pale stools; red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin; severe or persistent dizziness or lightheadedness; severe or persistent nausea, stomach pain, or vomiting; severe pain or swelling in the ankles, feet, or legs; shortness of breath; unusual bruising or bleeding; or yellowing of the skin or eyes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
