Chemical Name: AMLODIPINE (am-LOE-di-peen) and BENAZEPRIL (ben-AZ-e-pril)
Lotrel 5-20mg is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and a calcium channel blocker combination used to treat high blood pressure.
WARNING: Do not take Lotrel 5-20mg if you are pregnant. Lotrel 5-20mg can cause injury and possibly death to a developing fetus when used after the third month of pregnancy. Talk with your doctor at once if you suspect that you are pregnant. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Lotrel 5-20mg. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE LOTREL 5-20mg if you are taking iron dextran by injection. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) (eg, losartan), aldosterone blockers (eg, eplerenone), potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, spironolactone, triamterene), potassium supplements, trimethoprim, certain gold-containing medicines (eg, sodium aurothiomalate), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen, indomethacin), HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), vasopressin receptor antagonists (eg, conivaptan), imidazoles (eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole), lithium, sulfonylureas (eg, glyburide), or thiopurines (eg, azathiopurine). Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including a history of heart problems (eg, heart failure, aortic stenosis, recent heart attack), blood vessel problems, blood flow problems, bone marrow problems, kidney or liver problems, a kidney transplant, diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus), hardening of skin disease (scleroderma), bone marrow suppression, low blood counts, narrowing or hardening of the arteries of the brain, high blood potassium levels, low blood sodium levels, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are on a low salt diet, are dehydrated, have low blood volume, or low blood pressure. Tell your doctor if you are receiving treatments to reduce sensitivity to bee or wasp stings; you are scheduled to have surgery; or you are to receive anesthesia, kidney dialysis, or apheresis. USE OF LOTREL 5-20mg IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of angioedema (swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or unusual hoarseness), or if you are pregnant. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking Lotrel 5-20mg.
Follow the directions for using Lotrel 5-20mg provided by your doctor. An additional patient information leaflet is available with Lotrel 5-20mg. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this information. TAKE LOTREL 5-20mg with or without food. GRAPEFRUIT AND GRAPEFRUIT JUICE MAY INCREASE the risk of side effects from Lotrel 5-20mg. Talk with your doctor before including grapefruit or grapefruit juice in your diet. STORE LOTREL 5-20mg at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. DO NOT TAKE MORE THAN PRESCRIBED unless advised to do so by your doctor. Take Lotrel 5-20mg regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking Lotrel 5-20mg at the same time each day will help you to remember. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF LOTREL 5-20mg, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT TAKE LOTREL 5-20mg if you have had an allergic reaction to any ingredient in Lotrel 5-20mg or similar medicines (eg, any other ACE inhibitor). DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE without checking with your doctor. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including blood electrolytes, blood pressure, blood cell counts, and kidney function, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking Lotrel 5-20mg. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Lotrel 5-20mg. LOTREL 5-20mg MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS, LIGHTHEADEDNESS, OR FAINTING; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit or stand up slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Lotrel 5-20mg with caution. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to Lotrel 5-20mg. DO NOT USE A SALT SUBSTITUTE or potassium supplement without checking with your doctor. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS WHILE TAKING LOTREL 5-20mg and avoid engaging in activities that cause excessive sweating. Dehydration, excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea may lead to a fall in blood pressure. Contact your health care provider at once if any of these occur. A PERSISTENT, UNPRODUCTIVE COUGH may occur. Tell your doctor if this occurs. Recovery is rapid when the medicine is stopped. Patients who take medicine for high blood pressure often feel tired or run down for a few weeks after starting treatment. Be sure to take your medicine even if you may not feel "normal". Tell your doctor if you develop any new symptoms. LOTREL 5-20mg MAY NOT WORK AS WELL IN BLACK PATIENTS. They may also be at greater risk of side effects. Contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING LOTREL 5-20mg IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: USE OF LOTREL 5-20mg DURING PREGNANCY has resulted in fetal and newborn death. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. LOTREL 5-20mg IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking Lotrel 5-20mg.
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include headache; dry cough; dizziness or lightheadedness when sitting or standing; or swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience chest pain; dark urine; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; irregular or slow heartbeat; muscle cramps, pain, or weakness; severe or persistent nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting; severe or persistent dizziness or lightheadedness; severe stomach pain; unexplained weight gain; unusual weakness or fatigue; wheezing; or yellowing of the eyes or skin. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to Lotrel 5-20mg is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching, difficulty swallowing or breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; or unusual hoarseness. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, fast heartbeat, lightheadedness, or loss of consciousness.
DO NOT SHARE LOTREL 5-20mg with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE LOTREL 5-20mg for other health conditions. KEEP LOTREL 5-20mg out of the reach of children and pets. IF USING LOTREL 5-20mg FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
