Chemical Name: METOCLOPRAMIDE (met-oh-KLOE-pra-mide)
Reglan 5mg is a gastrointestinal stimulant used to treat gastroesophageal reflux and erosions/ulcers of the esophagus. It is also used to treat nausea, vomiting, heartburn, prolonged fullness after meals, and loss of appetite in patients with diabetes (diabetic gastroparesis). It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
WARNING: Reglan 5mg may cause a serious movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia, which may be permanent. The risk may be increased in patients who use high doses, or who take Reglan 5mg for a long period of time. The risk may also be increased in the elderly, women, and diabetic patients. Tell your doctor right away if you develop muscle problems with your arms; legs; or your tongue, face, mouth, or jaw (eg, tongue sticking out, puffing of cheeks, mouth puckering, chewing movements). Reglan 5mg should usually not be used for longer than 12 weeks. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Reglan 5mg. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE REGLAN 5mg if you are also taking cabergoline, pergolide, or you are taking medicines, such as phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), that may cause extrapyramidal reactions (abnormal, involuntary muscle movements of the head, neck, or limbs). Check with your doctor if you are unsure if any of your medicines may cause extrapyramidal reactions. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI's) (eg, phenelzine), anticholinergic medicine (eg, hyoscyamine), narcotic pain medicines (eg, codeine), acetaminophen, benzodiazepines (eg, diazepam), cyclosporine, insulin, levodopa, sedatives (eg, zolpidem), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), succinylcholine, tetracycline, or digoxin. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including a history of mental or mood problems (eg, depression) or suicidal thoughts or actions; a history of asthma, heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, Parkinson disease, blood problems (eg, porphyria), kidney problems, liver problems (eg, cirrhosis), breast cancer, or low levels of an enzyme called methemoglobin reductase; allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are taking another form of metoclopramide (eg, syrup. orally disintegrating tablet). USE OF REGLAN 5mg IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have seizures (eg, epilepsy); bleeding, blockage, or perforation in your stomach or intestines; or tumors on your adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma). Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking Reglan 5mg.
Follow the directions for using Reglan 5mg provided by your doctor. Reglan 5mg has a MEDICATION GUIDE approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about Reglan 5mg. TAKE REGLAN 5mg 30 MINUTES before meals unless directed otherwise by your doctor. IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL DAYS TO WEEKS for Reglan 5mg to work. Do not stop using Reglan 5mg without checking with your doctor. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or use Reglan 5mg for longer than 12 weeks without checking with your doctor. STORE REGLAN 5mg at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. KEEP REGLAN 5mg out of the reach of children and away from pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF REGLAN 5mg, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT TAKE REGLAN 5mg if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver and kidney function, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using the medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Reglan 5mg. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL or use medicines that may cause drowsiness while you are using Reglan 5mg without first checking with your doctor. REGLAN 5mg WILL ADD TO THE EFFECTS of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants. REGLAN 5mg MAY CAUSE drowsiness or dizziness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to Reglan 5mg. A SMALL NUMBER OF PATIENTS HAVE EXPERIENCED WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS when stopping Reglan 5mg. These symptoms may include dizziness, nervousness, and headaches. NEUROLEPTIC MALIGNANT SYNDROME (NMS) is a possibly fatal syndrome that can be caused by Reglan 5mg. Contact your doctor at once if you have fever; stiff muscles; confusion; abnormal thinking; fast or irregular heartbeat; and sweating. SOME PATIENTS WHO TAKE REGLAN 5mg MAY DEVELOP MUSCLE MOVEMENTS THAT THEY CANNOT CONTROL. Tell your doctor at once if you have muscle problems with your arms; legs; or your tongue, face, mouth, or jaw (eg, tongue sticking out, puffing of cheeks, mouth puckering, chewing movements) while taking Reglan 5mg. PATIENTS WHO TAKE REGLAN 5mg MAY BE AT INCREASED RISK FOR NEW OR WORSENING MENTAL OR MOOD CHANGES (EG, DEPRESSION) OR SUICIDAL THOUGHTS OR ACTIONS. Watch patients who take Reglan 5mg closely. Contact the doctor at once if new, worsened, or sudden symptoms such as depressed mood or any unusual change in mood or behavior occur. Contact the doctor right away if any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions occur. REGLAN 5mg MAY INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF A CERTAIN HORMONE (PROLACTIN) IN YOUR BLOOD. Contact your doctor right away if you experience enlarged breasts, missed menstrual period, decreased sexual ability, or nipple discharge. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING REGLAN 5mg IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Reglan 5mg during pregnancy. REGLAN 5mg IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using Reglan 5mg, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, Reglan 5mg may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking Reglan 5mg include decreased energy; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; nausea; restlessness; tiredness; or trouble sleeping. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience abnormal thinking; confusion; dark urine; decreased balance or coordination; decreased sexual ability; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever; hallucinations; loss of bladder control; mental or mood changes (eg, depression, anxiety, agitation, jitteriness); seizures; severe or persistent dizziness, headache, or trouble sleeping; severe or persistent restlessness, including inability to sit still; shortness of breath; stiff or rigid muscles; sudden increased sweating; sudden unusual weight gain; suicidal thoughts or actions; swelling of the arms, legs, or feet; uncontrolled muscle spasms or movements (eg, of the arms, legs, tongue, jaw, cheeks; twitching; tremors); vision changes; or yellowing of the skin or eyes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO REGLAN 5mg is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; or unusual hoarseness. IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness; confusion; agitation; muscle restlessness; and unusual movement of eyes, face, or limbs.
If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor. DO NOT SHARE REGLAN 5mg with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE REGLAN 5mg for other health conditions. IF USING REGLAN 5mg FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
