Chemical Name: METRONIDAZOLE (me-troe-NI-da-zole)
Metrogel 1% Gel is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent used to treat redness and inflammation associated with a skin condition known as rosacea. Metrogel 1% Gel may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Metrogel 1% Gel. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT USE METROGEL 1% GEL if you are also taking disulfiram. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking anticoagulants (such as warfarin). Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including a history of certain blood disorders (such as low white blood cell or platelet levels), allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Metrogel 1% Gel.
Follow the directions for using Metrogel 1% Gel provided by your doctor. Wash and completely dry the affected area. Gently rub the medicine in until it is evenly distributed. STORE METROGEL 1% GEL at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF METROGEL 1% GEL, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT use 2 doses at once.
DO NOT USE METROGEL 1% GEL if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or use Metrogel 1% Gel for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS for Metrogel 1% Gel to work. Do not stop using Metrogel 1% Gel without checking with your doctor first. Tell your doctor If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse. Metrogel 1% Gel is for use on the skin only. AVOID GETTING METROGEL 1% GEL IN YOUR EYES or on the inside of your nose or mouth. If you get it in any of these areas, rinse immediately with cool water. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR before you apply other topical products or medicines to the treated area. You may apply cosmetics after using some brands of Metrogel 1% Gel. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you may use cosmetics with your brand. BEFORE YOU BEGIN USING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. DO NOT USE METROGEL 1% GEL FOR OTHER SKIN CONDITIONS at a later time. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE DRINKING ALCOHOL while you are using Metrogel 1% Gel. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Metrogel 1% Gel during pregnancy. METROGEL 1% GEL IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while using Metrogel 1% Gel, check with your doctor or pharmacist first to discuss the risks to your baby.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using Metrogel 1% Gel, include redness, mild dryness, itching, burning, stinging, or skin irritation. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience nausea; tingling or numbness in hands and feet; or severe burning, dryness, irritation, itching, scaling, or stinging. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to Metrogel 1% Gel is unlikely but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Metrogel 1% Gel may be harmful if swallowed.
DO NOT SHARE METROGEL 1% GEL with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE METROGEL 1% GEL for other health conditions. KEEP METROGEL 1% GEL out of the reach of children and pets. IF YOU WILL BE USING METROGEL 1% GEL FOR AN EXTNEDED PERIOD OF TIME, be sure to obtain necessary refills before your supply runs out.
