Syrup
Chemical Name: CYPROHEPTADINE (si-proe-HEP-ta-deen)

Common uses
This medicine is an antihistamine used to treat symptoms of allergic reactions (such as those caused by seasonal allergies, food, blood or plasma, and other allergens). It is also used to treat mild, uncomplicated hives. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before using
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (such as furazolidone, phenelzine, or selegiline) or if you have taken an MAOI within the past 14 days. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (such as fluoxetine). DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including a history of asthma; bladder, stomach, or bowel blockage; difficulty urinating; glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye; overactive thyroid; prostate problems; heart or kidney problems; high blood pressure; seizures; allergies; pregnancy; or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have narrow angle glaucoma, peptic ulcer, an enlarged prostate; or bladder, stomach, or bowel blockage. Use of this medicine in newborns or premature infants is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Use a measuring device marked for medicine dosing. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure this dose. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. Do not store in the bathroom. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. THIS MEDICINE MAY INTERFERE WITH SKIN ALLERGY TESTS. If you are scheduled for a skin test, talk with your doctor. You may need to stop taking this medicine for a few days before the tests. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE YOU DRINK ALCOHOL while you are using this medicine. This medicine will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants (such as sleep aids and muscle relaxants). Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants. This medicine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may affect your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to this medicine. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medicine, especially dizziness, drowsiness, and low blood pressure. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN CHILDREN because they may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medicine, especially excitability. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include blurred vision; constipation; drowsiness; dizziness; dry mouth, throat, or nose; excitability; nausea; nervousness; or restlessness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience decreased coordination; difficulty urinating; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; persistent trouble sleeping; tremor; or unusual stomach or back pain. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience confusion; dark urine; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; mental or mood changes; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness, tiredness, or weakness; severe or persistent loss of appetite; unusual bruising or bleeding; or yellowing eyes and skin. AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO THIS MEDICINE IS UNLIKELY, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include dilated pupils, flushing, hallucinations, overexcitement, seizures, severe drowsiness, severe dry mouth, and vomiting.

LABORATORY OR MEDICAL TEST may be performed periodically to monitor you progress or check for side effects. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and pets.
