Chemical Name: ALLOPURINOL (al-oh-PURE-i-nole)
Allopurinol 100mg is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to treat gout and certain other conditions where the body makes too much uric acid. It is also used in some patients to reduce or prevent the formation of calcium oxalate type kidney stones. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Allopurinol 100mg. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking azathioprine or mercaptopurine. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking Allopurinol 100mg.
Follow the directions for using Allopurinol 100mg provided by your doctor. TAKE ALLOPURINOL 100mg with food or milk. DRINKING EXTRA FLUIDS while you are taking Allopurinol 100mg is recommended. Check with your doctor or nurse for instructions. STORE ALLOPURINOL 100mg at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF ALLOPURINOL 100mg, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
IT MAY TAKE 2 WEEKS OR MORE to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol 100mg. Do not stop taking Allopurinol 100mg without checking with your doctor. ALLOPURINOL 100mg IS NOT USEFUL for relieving an acute gout attack. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Allopurinol 100mg during pregnancy. ALLOPURINOL 100mg IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using Allopurinol 100mg, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience a skin rash, skin sores, itching, hives, painful urination, blood in urine, fever, irritation of the eyes, or swelling of lips or mouth. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. DO NOT SHARE ALLOPURINOL 100mg with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE ALLOPURINOL 100mg for other health conditions. KEEP ALLOPURINOL 100mg out of the reach of children. IF USING ALLOPURINOL 100mg FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
