Chemical Name: KETOCONAZOLE (kee-toe-KON-a-zole)

Common uses
Nizoral 200mg is an imidazole antifungal agent used to treat certain fungal infections.

Before using
WARNING: Nizoral 200mg has been shown to cause serious and sometimes fatal liver problems. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of liver toxicity such as unusual fatigue, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, vomiting, or severe or persistent nausea. Your doctor will perform liver function tests before you begin taking Nizoral 200mg and periodically during treatment. Use of Nizoral 200mg along with certain other medicines may increase your risk of serious and sometimes fatal heart problems, including irregular heartbeat. DO NOT TAKE NIZORAL 200mg IF YOU ARE ALSO TAKING astemizole, cisapride, or terfenadine. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Nizoral 200mg. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE NIZORAL 200mg if you are also taking an aldosterone blocker (such as eplerenone), conivaptan, dofetilide, an ergot alkaloid (such as ergotamine), erythromycin, midazolam, nevirapine, pimozide, a quinazoline (such as alfuzosin), quinidine, rifabutin, rifampin, triazolam, or a 5-HT receptor agonist (eg, eletriptan). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you take other prescription and nonprescription medicines (eg, used for infections, HIV, seizures, anxiety, sleep, heartburn, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart problems, high blood pressure, allergies, irregular heartbeat, pain, blood thinning, asthma, migraines, mood or mental problems, cancer, prostate problems, immune system suppression, erectile dysfunction, urinary problems, or contraception [birth control]), multivitamin products, and herbal or dietary supplements. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including low stomach acid (such hypochlorhydria), allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you have a history of regular alcohol use, abuse, or dependence; liver problems; or blood problems (such as porphyria). USE OF NIZORAL 200mg IS NOT RECOMMENDED IF you have a fungal infection in the brain membranes (fungal meningitis). Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking Nizoral 200mg.

Directions
Follow the directions for using Nizoral 200mg provided by your doctor. Nizoral 200mg may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. DO NOT TAKE ANTACIDS within 1 hour before or 2 hours after you take Nizoral 200mg. If you also take an anticholinergic (such as hyoscyamine), H2 antatgonist (such as famotidine), or a proton pump inhibitor (such as omeprazole), take Nizoral 200mg at least 2 hours before you take your anticholinergic, H2 antagonist, or proton pump inhibitor. STORE NIZORAL 200mg at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. Take Nizoral 200mg regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking it at the same time each day will help you to remember. TO CLEAR UP YOUR INFECTION COMPLETELY, continue taking Nizoral 200mg for the full course of treatment even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF NIZORAL 200mg, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Cautions
DO NOT TAKE NIZORAL 200mg if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take any more of Nizoral 200mg unless your doctor tells you to do so. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE without checking with your doctor. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver function may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking Nizoral 200mg. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Nizoral 200mg. USE OF ALCOHOL WITH NIZORAL 200mg has rarely caused symptoms such as flushing, rash, swelling of the hands and feet, nausea, and headache. Talk with your doctor before you drink alcohol while you are using Nizoral 200mg. NIZORAL 200mg MAY CAUSE dizziness or drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Nizoral 200mg. Using Nizoral 200mg alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING NIZORAL 200mg IN CHILDREN because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN TAKING BIRTH CONTROL PILLS: Nizoral 200mg may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pills. To prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control while you are taking Nizoral 200mg. IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Nizoral 200mg during pregnancy. NIZORAL 200mg IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking Nizoral 200mg. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, Nizoral 200mg may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may may occur while using Nizoral 200mg include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, stomach pain, or stomach upset. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience bloating; decreased sexual ability; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; loss of appetite; or numbness or tingling of the hands or feet. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience dark urine, depression or thoughts of suicide, irregular heartbeat, pale stools, severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain, swollen or tender abdomen, unusual bruising or bleeding, unusual tiredness or fatigue, vision changes, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. An allergic reaction to Nizoral 200mg is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
