Chemical Name: ERYTHROMYCIN (eh-rith-roe-MYE-sin)
Erythromycin 2% Gel is an antibiotic used to treat acne.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Erythromycin 2% Gel. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT USE ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL if you are also taking astemizole or terfenadine. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking colchicine. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions or allergies. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Erythromycin 2% Gel.
Follow the directions for using Erythromycin 2% Gel provided by your doctor. BEFORE USING ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL, wash the affected area with warm water and soap, rinse, and pat dry. Cover the affected and surrounding area with a thin film of medicine. Allow the medicine to dry. Wash your hands after you finish using Erythromycin 2% Gel. STORE ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.
ONCE YOU BEGIN USING ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL, it may take 3 to 8 weeks before you begin to see improvement. DO NOT GET ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL in your eyes or on the inside of your nose or mouth. If you get Erythromycin 2% Gel in your eyes, immediately wash them out with cool tap water. DO NOT USE OTHER MEDICINES or cleansers on your skin unless directed otherwise your doctor. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Erythromycin 2% Gel during pregnancy. ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using Erythromycin 2% Gel, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include dryness, peeling, mild stinging or burning immediately after applying. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience itching, burning, tenderness, or redness of your skin or eye irritation. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Erythromycin 2% Gel may be harmful if swallowed.
If your symptoms do not improve within 12 weeks or if they become worse, check with your doctor. DO NOT SHARE ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL for other health conditions. KEEP ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL out of the reach of children. IF USING ERYTHROMYCIN 2% GEL FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
