Capsules
Chemical Name: RAMIPRIL (RA-mi-pril)

Common uses
This medicine is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure. It may also be used in some patients following a heart attack to treat certain heart problems and improve survival. This medicine may be used in some patients with a history of stroke, diabetes, or certain heart or blood vessel problems to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before using
WARNING: This medicine may cause injury or death to the fetus if taken after the third month of pregnancy. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking aldosterone blockers (such as eplerenone), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (such as ibuprofen or naproxen), potassium-sparing diuretics (such as spironolactone or triamterene), other diuretics (such as hydrochlorothiazide or furosemide), lithium, potassium supplements, thiopurines (such as azathioprine), or trimethoprim. DO NOT START OR STOP ANY MEDICINE without doctor or pharmacist approval. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you are receiving treatments to reduce sensitivity to bee stings. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including diabetes, dehydration, dialysis, low blood volume, electrolyte problems (such as high blood potassium levels or low blood sodium levels), low-salt diet, autoimmune problems (such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or scleroderma), allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you have a history of any unusual swelling of your face, neck, or trunk (angioedema); blood vessel problems; blood flow problems; bone marrow problems; kidney problems or kidney transplant; heart problems (such as heart failure, aortic stenosis, recent heart attack); stroke; or liver problems (such as cirrhosis, ascites). USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of unusual swelling of your face, neck, throat, tongue, lips, or trunk (angioedema) after taking this or any other ACE inhibitor medicine. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you are in your second or third trimester of pregnancy. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, the contents may be sprinkled on a small amount (about 4 ounces) of applesauce or mixed with 4 ounces (120ml) of water or apple juice. It is best to eat or drink the entire mixture immediately after mixing. These mixtures may be stored at room temperature for 24 hours or in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly-closed container away from heat and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will help you to remember. IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS for this medicine to work. Do not stop using this medicine without checking with your doctor. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.

Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it, to other ACE inhibitors, or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE a serious side effect called angioedema. Contact your doctor at once if you develop swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing; or hoarseness. THIS MEDICINE MAY NOT WORK AS WELL in black patients. They may also be at greater risk of side effects. Contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE without checking with your doctor. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, especially when you first begin to take it. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. DEHYDRATION, EXCESSIVE SWEATING, VOMITING, OR DIARRHEA may increase the risk of low blood pressure. Contact your health care provider at once if any of these occur. Drink plenty of fluids during exercise or other activities where excessive sweating may occur. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to this medicine. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. RARELY, THIS MEDICINE MAY LOWER THE ABILITY of your body to fight infection. This risk may be greater if you have certain other health problems (such as kidney problems, collagen vascular disease). Avoid contact with people who have colds or infections. Tell your doctor if you notice signs of infection like fever, sore throat, rash, or chills. DO NOT USE A SALT SUBSTITUTE or other potassium supplement without checking with your doctor. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: USE OF THIS MEDICINE DURING PREGNANCY has resulted in birth defects or fetal death. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, this medicine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include cough, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, or tiredness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience a change in the amount of your urine produced or signs of infection (such as fever, chills, or persistent sore throat). CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience severe lightheadedness or fainting; irregular heartbeat; seizures; swelling of hands, legs, face, lips, eyes, throat, tongue, or trunk; difficulty swallowing or breathing; hoarseness; chest pain; unusual stomach pain; yellowing of the skin or eyes; or darkening of your urine. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include fainting; severe dizziness or lightheadedness; and weakness.
