Changing the world without changing the Earth

  • Planet Friendly
  • 100% Biodegradable
  • 100% Compostable

BioBag is the world's largest selling brand of biodegradable and compostable bags made from the material, Mater-Bi. Widely used for the collection of food waste for composting, BioBags are also popular among consumers who seek to reduce the amount of polyethylene-based plastics in the environment. BioBags are GMO free, certified for use in organic agriculture and CEN certified for restricted use of metals in our vegetable-based inks and dyes. Our products meet the ASTM D6400-99 requirements, which is the gold standard for compostable plastic. BioBags are shelf stable, just like paper towels, yet biodegrade quickly when exposed to nature's elements and micro-organisms, leaving no harmful residues behind. Please enjoy this wonderful product!

Thank you for helping reduce the usage of new and recycled polyethylene-based plastic. With your help, we can soon eliminate regular plastic bags from our environment. BioBags "go away" naturally when exposed to the earth's elements and micro-organisms. BioBags are great for the collection of food waste and other biodegradable materials for composting. Together, we can change the world, without changing the earth.

The Ten Second Plastic Bag Lesson
Regular polyethylene-based plastic bags can take well over 100 years to degrade and are not compostable. Less than 2% of all plastic bags ever get recycled. Plastic bags litter our streets, backwoods and waterways. Studies indicate that 100,000 marine animals and 2 million birds die each year from ingesting or being caught up in plastic debris. Some manufacturers are blending additives to polyethylene to produce "degradable" bags. Unfortunately, this process fragments the bags into pieces of plastic debris that do not meet the ASTM D6400-99 standard for biodegradable and compostable plastic. These pieces cause serious harm when mistaken by animals and birds for food. BioBag products use no polyethylene in the production process. We are fully certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute to be 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable. Please be sure the biodegradable products you buy are properly certified.

Nature knows the difference.

These bags seem to hold up well under pressure. We've been getting a bit of rain here in Iowa lately, but these bags didn't fail me. I took a full bag out to the curb without any container protecting it and it still made it in one piece without any tears or spills.

These bags are several inches shorter than standard "tall kitchen bags", so if you have a tall trash can, the bags will tend to slide down inside the can (an extra-large rubber band can be used hold the bag in place, if you have one). The bags are of average strength; adequate for normal kitchen trash, but not super durable. There are no tie-flaps or drawstrings; this isn't a problem for me, but other people may not like the lack of closure. They are also very expensive compared to regular plastic bags. Overall I am fairly satisfied with BioBags and will continue to buy them, but I look forward to other companies producing biodegradable bags in the future, so that taller, cheaper bags might become available.

I like these bags very much, and the concept of them even better! The only things I've had a slight problem with were that they are a little short for our kitchen waste basket (perhaps the leaf & lawn bag size might work though!), so overfilling the trash can is a big no-no (hard to tie!) They can start to degrade while still in the basket (doing their job!) so, that too is good encouragement to take out the trash more frequently and they are a tad bit expensive... I wish the government would allow using environmentally beneficial products such as these as tax write-offs!

I like that these bags are biodegradable, but they are too thin and "sweat" for normal kitchen use, and we compost, recycle, etc. already. I double bag with these! They seem a bit shorter too so don't fit into our trash can without sagging edges. We've switched to 7th generation and we are happy with those. We use the smaller size for our food scraps and are happy with those.

Love the bags, love the idea! A couple of downsides though: 1. bags start to biodegrade right in the trash bin, so just take your trash out more often, which is not so bad! 2. No string, so make sure not to overflow your trashcan. Other then that - no other bags are like them!

I'm very happy with these, and haven't experienced any problems with them tearing or breaking down. We do tend to fill them up within 3-4 days, so I don't know how they would hold up if they sat around longer than that. The only drawback is the expense, but it's one of those things that I feel good about doing, so I buy them anyway.

I *love* these. We use them in a big trash can in the kitchen, and have never had a problem. Some common sense suggestions: don't let wet animal/plant matter sit against the bag for a week, pour liquids down the drain, and don't expect the bag to hold up more than one week when it's full of garbage. Recycling cuts down on the amount of trash in the bag, and I typically fling old food into the flowerbeds for the ants and possums to enjoy rather than storing it in a trash bag indoors. If you have trouble filling the bag before it starts to break down, consider the smaller size. If you find the bag too small, perhaps generating less waste and/or recycling is the solution. If you just keep in mind that these bags are biodegradable and treat them as such (like, don't fill it full of rotten tomatoes and leave it for a week), you will have the same experience that makes me a very happy customer.

These bags are great. In regards to other comments about them breaking, an earlier review was correct. If you throw away a lot of wet things, and your trash is in a warm/sunny area, they will start to break down. The best way to avoid this is to get a compost bin and compost all food scraps. Another solution is to take out the trash right after you know you throw away something wet. Yet another solution is just to bring your can out to your bin and dump it inside, thus not needing to carry the bag out at all. I found that after getting a compost bin, my trash is much more light weight and I have a lot less, so I have no issue with these bags. Do note that if your trash goes to a landfill, these do not help it biodegradable because landfill trash doesn't biodegrade; it is deprived of the oxygen and and light needed. But, you are helping to lessen your reliance on big oil because regular plastic is petroleum based.

Ridiculous. I'm all for being 'green' but what's the point if nobody buys them because they are too expensive or really poorly made?

Oh, this is going to break my green heart... I bought a couple boxes of these bags and have been using them, but-- maybe because it is warmer outside (and in!) or maybe because we don't create enough garbage to take it out more than once a week-- the bags keep breaking! It looks like they actually begin to breakdown in our household trash can. It was a mess. Now, we are back on the earth-hating white plastic bags while I look for something else to try.

I am now on my third order of the kitchen bags. I love using these bags rather than plastic, and will continue to buy them. My only complaint/caution is that they sometimes start to biodegrade right there in the kitchen trash bin! This is especially problematic when throwing away wet food waste (banana peels, eggs shells, etc.). I suppose this is a small price to pay for saving the world. :) One solution to the biodegrading/leaking problem is to put food waste into something else already in the trash, like an empty milk carton, and prevent direct contact with the BioBag.

They aren't the strongest, most durable bags, but the fact that they are biodegradable makes it more than worth it. Just don't overfill the bag, as it's hard to tie them off.

In addition to being compostable, these bags have proven to be more reliable for daily trash collection than conventional 'plastic' trash bags. I have not experienced any breakage or splitting, even when heavily loaded. Even though these bags are initially more costly, they are more economical in the long run, no reason to double bag.

Excellent for compost, I really like these bags. I would not recommend them for regular trash, especially if you overfill them. They have no strings, but again, think about the impact of those plastic strings on the environment!

Although they are more expensive than other brands, I feel very good about using these bags since theyre biodegradable. And except for the light green color, you'd never know they're any different than regular bags. I use this in a kitchen garbage bin.
