I always used to keep Anbesol on hand to quickly abort a cold sore and to heal a canker sore. The last time I bought it, it didn't work. Checking the old and the new bottle, I discovered the new Anbesol has neither phenol nor menthol. I suspect it was the phenol that cured cold sores and canker sores. Now it is just a not so special topical pain killer.
