Danger: Ultraviolet Radiation
Sunlight is made up of a wide spectrum of wavelengths, including the high-energy ultraviolet (UV) range invisible to the human eye. This part of the spectrum is divided into UVA and UVB wavelengths. The shorter wavelength UVB rays are the ones responsible for skin tanning, but with overexposure they can also cause reddening, skin burn, blisters and skin discoloration. The longer UVA waves penetrate deeper into skin tissues, weakening the supporting collagen and elastin cells, forming lines and wrinkles and reducing skin's firmness. The most dangerous effect of UV radiation, though, is the potential for skin cancer. The danger of UV radiation is not limited to bright, sunny days, either: the rays are so powerful that they are able to penetrate through an overcast sky and retain their strength even when reflected off sand, snow and pavement. Although stronger in the summer, particularly at midday, UV radiation presents a potential danger at any time.
Screen Out Those Rays!
Most sunscreens are formulated with chemicals that react with the UV rays, to prevent them from harming the skin. Solar Sense
uses a mineral – zinc oxide – to physically protect against the radiation – both UVA and UVB – before it touches the skin. Rated as offering the highest level of protection of all physical sunscreens by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, zinc oxide also begins to offer protection as soon as it is applied (compared to a wait of 30 minutes for chemical sunscreens) and is effective over a longer time.
Pure and Effective
The line of Solar Sense sunscreens contains a powerful proprietary form of micronized clear zinc oxide, in a 14.5% concentration, to effectively protect against the powerful UV rays. The formulas also include aloe and green tea extracts, plus vitamins A, C and E, to provide hydrating, healing and antioxidant benefits to the skin. The sunscreens are made without parabens or oxybenzone and are free of fragrances. The non-comedogenic (does not clog pores), hypo-allergenic and non-greasy formulas instantly rub into the skin, smooth and clear. Available in creams and sticks, they are not only convenient to use, but are designed to cover and protect skin anywhere and anytime – Solar Sense isn't just for the beach or sports field. Of course, if your kids (or the kid in you) want to show off your sunscreen, the Zany Zinc line offers five fun colors. Although they are rated water resistant up to 8 hours, Solar Sense sunscreens should be re-applied after swimming or vigorous exercise. back to top »
