Everything works fine; a great unit. However, my being in the manufacturing of batteries will help you readers out!
First of all, DO NOT leave the unit on the charger when not in use! The biggest enemy of the lithium ion battery is heat! When it is charged all the way it is at it's hottest level. The proper way for long battery life is to fully charge the unit, then keep it off the charger and keep using it until the unit runs almost all the way down ( 10-15% left! ). It will last longest in a cooler setting ( temperature ). The cooler the better. I know bathrooms aren't very cool, so if possible, keep it in a cooler area. Also, never let the battery run all the way down, as this could damage the composition of the battery!
If you have an older model with a nickel type battery (nicad), charge it all the way and always drain it completely before charging as these type batteries have a memory and will last longer and have a better capacity using them in this manner. Keeping these type batteries on the charger all the time is really insane, because of the memory properties.
Cell phones and auto gps units use lithium ion, so follow the method for this type battery. REMEMBER, DON'T keep the battery at a full charge all the time. They last longest with frequent use, charging full, then going down to about 10-15% , before charging again! If you ever store the unit, charge it to about 40% or so. This is the best condition for storing. Do not store fully charged. Also, batteries that are discharged for a lengthy period of time will enter a deep discharge cycle and permanent damage could occur! And the charging capacity will deminish! Store in a cool dry place if you aren't using it.

Not as durable as their older models

I own a 6930 model and I could see that the 6972 looks like it's the same brush main unit and same brush head used, but I must say that after more than 5 years of using Philips electric (battery) toothbrushes, the 6930 DOES not hold up to being durable and gets wobbly on the brush head mount after only a few months of use. Philips was nice enough to have it replaced (in-warranty) in the 8 months I owned it, but now that the warranty ran out... Typically 3 years is what they say that the toothbrush reaches the end of its product life, but the older model I owned, by Philips as well, lasted me 5 years and that made me real happy. That one finally was beyond being chargeable and I retired it. Suffice to say, Philips SHOULD IMPROVE the design of this current line of toothbrushes.

As a owner of the older model rechargeable toothbrush from Sonicare, I found this one much easier to use and easier to clean. Also, this model is slim and the battery last much longer so I found it good for travel. However, mine broke maybe ~6 month I bought it because the connector was rusted. I think this might be prevented if I removed the brushhead every time I finished brushing my teeth. But, I am not sure. Soon after that, the UV sanitizer broke, too.

I am not sure how durable it will be as I have only used it for about a month, I hope it does not wear out quickly. The reason to purchase was to replace a previous model (same brand) which wore out and all top surfaces ripped apart. We really like this, It has settings that are practical such as sensitive and so on, Sometimes, having the sensitive option is very good. The brushes it comes with are perfect, one regular and one is a smallhead, so if someone is looking to share this between two people,for example, they need to know that the brushheads are not the same, the smaller one is for more detailed use, and does not serve the purpose for cleaning an adult mouth on a regular bi-daily basis. The regular brush it comes with is very good. I wondered if the newer toothbrush head (Diamond) would fit; the good news is that it does! For a different experience I suggest the new Diamond thoothbrush head replacements (same brand - drugstore has them) fit very well and are very good. Never hesitate to buy this. As I say, having these toothbrushes is one of the most wonderful small things to have in life. The storage/cleaning is wonderful, stores them away and organized.

What a great way to start your morning! Clean teeth as if you just returned from the dentist, and stimulates good gums. Already after only a few days use, my teeth were whiter, and gums were healthier too.For me, it took a little getting used to at first. The vibration and I think it's a little bit noisy (but maybe that's just because it's in my mouth!) The timer is a great feature to insure you're brushing right, but it also made for messy brushing. I didn't realize that I wasn't brushing long enough previously, so it's worth the trade off. I also like the Sanitizer and optional modes. Recommend the compact brush head for smaller mouths.
