Formulas That Firm
Changes in skin elasticity are prompted by reductions in collagen and elastin levels. Collagen and elastin are proteins that support your skin. Your body makes less and less of these proteins as you age, resulting in a loss of skin elasticity. In addition, particles called free radicals that are found in ultraviolet radiation and elsewhere in the environment can damage existing collagen fibers and the parts of the cells that produce collagen. This speeds up the aging process.
Many anti-wrinkle moisturizers work by strengthening the skin, promoting a firmer complexion. Some do so with ingredients that stimulate collagen production like vitamin C, while others add synthetic or natural collagen and elastin. There are also firming moisturizers that aid in cellular repair with peptide complexes and other ingredients to help wrinkled skin recover from damage.
Moisturizers That Resurface
Anti-wrinkle moisturizers can address fine lines and wrinkles directly to help make them less visible. Often, this is done with chemical exfoliators, ingredients that remove dead skin from the complexion. The most commonly used chemical exfoliators in anti-wrinkle moisturizers are alpha hydroxy acids, a class of naturally-derived acids that includes glycolic acid, citric acid and lactic acid. Moisturizers
that contain chemical exfoliators gradually soften fine lines and wrinkles by reducing their depth as they resurface the complexion.
Hydrators That Protect
Some anti-wrinkle moisturizers are formulated to minimize wrinkles by fighting the cellular damage caused by free radicals. This is done with the help of antioxidants, nutrients that neutralize free radicals before they can damage cells. Green tea extract, alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, resveratrol and vitamins A, C and E are all common antioxidant active ingredients.
Many antioxidant anti-wrinkle moisturizers also address existing signs of aging in the same way that firming moisturizers do. For daytime, you can find anti-wrinkle moisturizers with SPF protection that shield skin from ultraviolet light that can lead to premature wrinkling.
