Toner and Astringents

 –  Since skin is constantly reacting to both internal and external factors, it can be notoriously difficult to care for. Many people find that regular cleansing alone isn't enough of a treatment to rid skin of the dirt and oil and prepare the complexion for moisturizers and treatments. Toners and astringents are often used to complete the cleansing process and refine pores. Here at drugstore.com, we have a wide assortment of natural toner and astringents that produce beautiful results using botanical ingredients.

Toner vs Astringents

The more products you add to your skin care regimen, the more confusing it can be to keep them all straight. Often, people use the terms "toner" and "astringent" interchangeably even though there are several important distinctions between these two types of products.

Both can be used after your facial cleanser to help remove excess residue, dirt, and oil. Both products are also usually applied with a cotton ball or pre-soaked towelette.

Toner is typically recommended for normal to dry skin types because it is a mild product that won't have a drying effect. Instead, it's formulated to bring the skin back to an ideal pH to maximize the effectiveness of skin care products to follow.

Astringent, on the other hand, is basically a strong toner that contains antiseptic ingredients. These products might be preferred by individuals with particularly oily, acne-prone skin because they can kill germs while removing excess oil. Traditional astringents are usually alcohol-based, but many natural brands will substitute botanical ingredients for alcohol.

Potential Advantages of Using Natural Products

In general, natural products are those that try to avoid chemical ingredients as much as possible. Some manufacturers guarantee that their products only use botanical ingredients, while others will manufacture formulas with a combination of chemical and botanical components.

Common ingredients in natural toners and astringents include aloe vera, vegetable glycerin, and rosewater. Many natural formulas specifically steer clear of ingredients like parabens, phthalates, artificial dyes, and more.

Alcohol is known for its astringent properties but many natural products avoid its use by substituting witch hazel instead. Other manufacturers still use alcohol for its antiseptic and pore-refining properties, but they will ensure that only natural grain alcohol is included in their formulas.
