Masks and Scrubs

 – Acne is a common skin problem that occurs when your pores become clogged with dead skin cells, dirt, and oil. This causes bacteria to become trapped and may lead to blemishes on your face, neck, and chest.

Acne usually begins in the teen years due to changes in hormones, specifically to testosterone levels in both males and females. The change in hormone level causes the skin to secrete more oil and trap more impurities. Many women report an increase in their symptoms of acne in the days before they menstruate which is thought to be related to hormonal shifts as well.  read more about masks and scrubs »

Acne can linger into young adulthood and, for some people, throughout their lives. It is commonly believed that additional factors such as stress and greasy foods may play some role in acne but studies have found that type and severity of acne is genetic and runs in families.

Even though the primary cause of acne is genetics it still responds to high quality skin care. In fact, there are many products available, such as facial scrubs and masks, which can help lessen severity and skin health.

Acne scrubs are used as cleansers and exfoliants, which mean they help to remove the layer of dead skin cells and keep your pores open. They sometimes contain a small amount of salicylic acid or microbeads which can make the exfoliant action more effective in removing dead skin cells, reducing inflammation, and decreasing visible inflammation and redness.

It’s important to remember not to scrub your skin roughly and that every acne scrub is different. Some scrubs can be used multiple times a day while others work best if used only 3 to 4 times a week. You should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions because if you use the product incorrectly, your skin can become irritated and over dry and may worsen the condition of your skin.

While scrubs are usually meant to be used daily, masks are made to provide your skin with a deeper and more intensive clean, as well as increased oil control. They may also provide much-needed hydration, a key to clear and healthy-looking skin.

Like scrubs, many masks contain small amounts of salicylic acid, helping to clear the pores. They also contain ingredients which can draw dirt and oil out from deep in your pores. Antioxidants, minerals, and fruit extracts are often added to provide your skin with important nutrients.

Masks should only be used a couple of times a week at most. They are always applied to skin that has been cleansed thoroughly. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions because times can vary based on skin type. Incorrect use can result in skin irritation.

Scrubs and masks, when used together, can decrease the build-up of dirt and oil, promote clarity and reduce the risk of future breakouts. You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are considering incorporating masks and scrubs into your regular skin care routine to ensure that you find the best solution that addresses your specific concerns.

*The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that you apply a small amount of any over the counter acne medication to one or two small affected areas for 3 days when using it for the first time. This will help you to make sure you don’t exhibit any hypersensitivity symptoms before using the product more broadly. If no discomfort occurs, be sure to follow the directions on the label and review the Drug Facts.
