What Causes Foot Odor?

Foot odor is slightly more complex than other common types of body odor. Sweat is always one of the main culprits when it comes to body odor because it creates the warm, moist environment that helps bacteria thrive. Whereas other parts of the body only sweat as a cooling mechanism, however, the feet always produce sweat.

The bacteria that live on feet are also unique because they specifically feed on the dead skin cells that collect over time. These germs then release an acidic gas that has the characteristic "cheesy" smell often associated with foot odor.

Products to Fight Moisture and Bacteria

There are several steps you can take to control foot odor.

Foot powders are among the most popular products you can use. These powders absorb moisture and help feet stay dry. Without the moist environment that helps bacteria thrive, foot odor is less likely to develop.

You can also apply antiperspirants to feet in order to reduce the production of sweat.

Another way to reduce odor is to kill the bacteria that already exist. Some foot powders, lotions, sprays, and even insoles contain ingredients that make feet inhospitable to odor-causing bacteria.

One of the best long-term solutions for controlling odor is to prevent excess skin from accumulating so that bacteria have less to feed on. In addition to washing feet regularly with soap, you can also exfoliate skin with a foot file or pumice stone.
