What Causes Travel Sickness?

Motion sickness occurs when the signals your brain receives from your inner ear, eyes and other senses don’t match up. For example, if you’re reading a book while in a moving vehicle, your inner ear may sense motion, but your eyes are fixed on a still object and are therefore sending conflicting signals to the brain. (This is why sitting in the front seat can ease symptoms for some people who suffer from motion sickness.) Travel sickness is common on airplanes and boats, when travelers may sense motion, but may not be able to see it.

Over-the-Counter Medications

One way to deal with travel sickness symptoms is with the help of medications that you can purchase over the counter without a doctor's prescription. Many motion sickness medications contain antihistamines like dimenhydrinate and meclizine hydrochloride. The medicines seem to interfere with the conflicting cues that trigger the symptoms. Normally, travel sickness medications are taken at the start of a trip before symptoms arise. Some can cause drowsiness, so you may not be able to drive after taking them. Before using a motion sickness medication, it is wise to consult your doctor to double-check that the drug is safe for you.

Natural Remedies for Travel Sickness

For centuries, people have used natural substances to ease nausea associated with travel. Today, you can find a number of dietary aids for travel sickness that contain traditional folk remedies for motion-related nausea and vomiting. Some of the ingredients commonly used in these products include ginger, peppermint and black horehound herbs. Homeopathic travel sickness products formulated on the basis of an 18th-century alternative healing system are also available. There is not enough evidence to prove that any one natural product for travel sickness will work for anyone, and you should still consult a doctor before taking any type of natural supplement.

Other Ways to Deal with Nausea

If you prefer not to take a supplement or medication to address travel sickness, there are other products available to help you as you travel. Some people find that wearing special acupressure wrist bands diminishes symptoms of motion sickness. There are also inhalers that may help address nausea with aromatherapy and travel sickness bags that you can use to deal with sudden sickness. We carry many helpful items in our travel store.
