The Importance of Lens Care

Contact lenses are a wonderful option for people who need eyesight correction: because there are no frames, contacts allow the natural shape of your face to show through. With the convenience of contact lenses comes the responsibility of careful lens care. As convenient and easy as lenses are to use, they can also cause eye infections, blurry vision and eye redness. To avoid these side-effects, it is important to keep lenses clean and disinfected. Bacteria that can infect your eyes need to be cleaned from the lenses to prevent infection and potential eye damage. Both the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Food and Drug Administration offer the following advice:

1. Keep your lenses clean and disinfected with approved cleansers
2. Know which type of lenses you use – soft or hard – and use the appropriate solution to keep them disinfected and comfortable
3. Never use saliva (spit) to clean your lenses – it can easily cause infection
4. Wash and rinse your hands before removing or placing your lenses
5. Take care of your lenses case, frequently rinsing it out between use, with the same solution you use to keep the lenses clean and disinfected
6. If you experience such symptoms as blurred vision, the feeling of scratching or itching in your eyes or if the areas around your eyes shows swelling, itching, puffiness or redness, contact your doctor

Keeping Your Lenses Comfortable and Safe

There are many multi-purpose solutions available for lens care. Choose what is best for you: drops, tablet soaks or wipes. You can decide which is most convenient and effective for your type of lenses and how often you wear them. Soft lenses, hard lenses, long-wear or short use, you can decide what is best for you.

Keep in Contact With Your Doctor

Enjoy the freedom that comes with your lenses, but make sure you follow your doctor's instructions on eye care. If you experience any blurred vision, feeling of scratching or discomfort in your eyes or if you have any itching, swelling or redness in your eyes, please contact your eye doctor immediately.
