Cleaning Teeth When You Have Braces

It's important to maintain good oral care during orthodontic treatment. If you find it difficult to floss between your teeth due to your braces or other orthodontic devices, then try some of the alternative interdental cleaners that we carry. Floss threaders can help you to clean under braces, bridges, and crowns using string floss. Alternatively, you can use a small bristled pick that fits into the gaps between your teeth to clean away plaque and food debris.

Water Flossers for Orthodontic Care

Another option is to use a water flosser, which drives fluid through the gaps between your teeth to wash away debris. All you need to do is direct the jet of water between your teeth and into your gum line, working around the wires and brackets of your braces. Many people find using a water flosser to be a very comfortable and convenient experience, particularly during orthodontic treatment, when flossing is difficult.

We carry several models of battery-powered water flossers along with compatible replacement tips. Manufacturers of water flossers generally recommend replacing water jet tips once every three to six months to maintain the performance of the device.

Relief for Irritated Gums

Orthodontic devices can sometimes cause irritation to the gums and soft tissues of the mouth. If you experience irritation, you should check with your orthodontist to see whether the device can be adjusted to make it more comfortable. While you are waiting for an appointment, you can gain short-term relief from pain by applying an oral pain relieving gel with your dentist’s approval. These products typically contain benzocaine to temporarily numb the area. Follow the directions carefully when using these products.
