Differences Between Disposable, Cartridge, and Safety Razors

Among men's manual razors, you'll find that there are a few distinct variations. Disposable razors combine the handle and the blade into a single unit that can be thrown away after a few shaves. The major difference that sets cartridge razors apart is the fact that the handle is designed to be reused over and over again. The blades are housed within a cartridge that should be replaced as soon as the razor starts to lose some of its effectiveness.

While disposable and cartridge razors are relatively similar in most respects, safety razors are unique. These products make use of double-edged razor blades so that you can change up your shaving pattern based on the direction of hair growth. The handle and head of safety razors are reusable. The only part that gets changed out is the blade itself when it starts to get dull.

Choosing the Number of Blades

Traditional manual razors might be equipped with anywhere from one to five blades that can be used for hair removal. The number of blades directly impacts the cost of the razor so you will typically find that products with multiple blades are more expensive than those with just one.

On the other hand, you may prefer the added efficacy of a razor with multiple blades because these products typically remove hair with fewer strokes and may promote a more comfortable shave.

Other Razor Features to Consider

Beyond the number of regular blades, you might also consider whether the razor you are looking at has a built-in trimmer blade that can be used for shaving hard-to-reach areas. Razors also have different types of handles and heads, many of which are designed to be ergonomic.

If you are particularly worried about irritation, you may choose a razor with built-in moisturizing strips that can help reduce or relieve razor burn.
