I also felt better about crating him with this rather than the hard plastic that made it hard for him to move in there. He did not have a problem with the black (non see-through) sides though I can imagine some would. After 12 days of wear it is almost completely destroyed but I feel it took ALOT of abuse. I have 2 XL dogs and one liked to pull on the cone while they were playing. It would come off collar and all so I tightened the collar and that is when elastic loops started to break and those are instrumental in keeping it on securely. The edges of the cone were pretty beat up but that did not affect its use. It started to stink from all the water and food drool so I washed it and it did fine. It got more flexible over time and would sometimes get pushed back but again this was after a lot of abuse!THe foster pup was healing from being neutered and it seemed like he was able to lick the area or at least very close to it (witht he cone on it was hard to see where he was licking). He is an 85lb Lab wearing the XL so depending on where the injury is there are limits to what this can protect. The hard plastic cone was a bit longer but then that was part of the annoyance!If you have 1 dog or don't let the coned dog play much I think it will hold up just fine and still I do not regret buying it, [$]for 12 days of relative peace and comfort for all of us was totally worth it! Too bad they don't make the elastic a bit stronger!p.s. as for the reviewer who said it was just as loud as the hard ones, I disagree, it still makes some noise but not the horrible scraping sound that you know is taking paint off the walls. This E-Collar stops the biting and licking on the skin, is sturdy, easy to clean, and works great on my big dogs. This is the 2nd one I have purchased, but the 1st one is still in great shape, no rips, no tears, nothing wrong. That hard plastic one you get from your vet is just awful, and doesn't last very long. The plastic one we bought at the vet was loud (as she walked into walls) and she could not get settled for 2 days. Her sleeping and us sleeping at night was imperative. The comfy cone has made a world of difference- she does not fight to get it on and it soft yet prohibits her from bothering her infection. BEST PURCHASE! With this collar they can move around easily without distroying everything in their path. I do wish they would make one even longer. 12 inches is not long enough for a dog with a very long muzzle. Comments about The Comfy Cone Soft E-Collar, 30 cm, Extra Large, 1 ea: I needed something to keep my golden retreiver from licking a hot spot on her front leg. I tried the clear plastic cone which totally freaked her out to where she wouldn't even walk, then it shattered. Tried wrapping her leg with bandages then covering the bandages with duct tape (loosely). She just chewed below the duct tape and caused a new hot spot. Finally trid the comfy cone which she doesn't really like, but she will walk in it and lay down. She won't go to the bathroom with it on and can't eat or drink, but I can put it on her for part of the day. I use bitter apple spray when she doesn't have it on and that helps too. With the comfy cone there is no problem. The plastic cone he knew if he kept hitting on something it would pop open come off and he could get to his sore again, not with the comfy cone, it stays on! I order an XL, she is an American Pitbull, and it keeps her off of her hind quarters and paws. I moved up in size from a large to an extra large because of greater depth of the collar. The only con is it is still about as noisy as the plastic cone. But it is so much more comfortable then the plastic cone for my dog. The other con is that if my dog who is already black goes out side her head heats up very quickly in the sun with the cone since it is black. As he was bound and determined to take out his own stitches, I ordered this[...]I can't say he liked it, but he tolerated it well for the rest of the 2 weeks, and healed perfectly. It took a bit for him to learn how to drink with it on, but it folds back for meal time without giving him access to the wound afterwards. For a large dog, this is ideal. He can rest comfortably and maneuver well in it, and it doesn't give your shins bruises when the dog comes up to you. I suggest this for all large dog, if they need this kind of protection!
