The sponge is a great method of birth control if you don't have sex more than once a week or are not comfortable with hormones. It's even better if you can be sure of your partner with regard to disease, super easy to use, effective, and doesn't interrupt the moment. Also the sponge allows for more than 1 episode of intercourse per use. There can be a bitter taste left on the genitals if you switch to oral, so you might want to have some water and washcloth handy.

It pains me to give the Today's sponge a bad review, but I have to because for the first time using in over a decade I've developed an allergic reaction to its ingredients. Maybe the formula has changed over the years or maybe my body composition has changed since I gave birth to my son last year. But I got a vaginal irritation as described, verbatim on the box. So unfortunately I will have to give away my 2nd unopened box of sponges to my sister. I will forever miss using it, it was the favorite form of contraception for me and my husband :0( For those ladies who can still use it enjoy, enjoy enjoy it! And use it for me too !

Comments about Today Sponge Vaginal Contraceptive, 3 ea:

I really like the easy to follow directions. I love that it's quick acting and lasts a long time. I dislike that they're so expensive! It's basically $5/day if you plan to use this in place of a hormonal birth control. I'm breastfeeding my 12 week old currently and didn't want to chance a birth control that would affect my supply. This was a good option but it's making getting it on every day pretty pricey!

Comments about Today Sponge Vaginal Contraceptive, 3 ea:

The Today Sponge is the best bc method I have ever used, and felt confident to rely on without worrying about side effects risks. The key is to insert and remove properly, which is very easy with a relaxed body and by the info given with the package. The Spongeworthy Club is like a sisterhood, and super helpful ... on all levels of concern ... and offers a discount with auto-shipment .. awesome!

Comments about Today Sponge Vaginal Contraceptive, 3 ea:

This is my favorite alternative to "regular" birth control. Only once did I have trouble removing it, but once I understood how to use my Keigel muscles to bear down, it hasn't ever been a problem. If it isn't take on while seated on the toilet, try standing up with one foot on the tub or toilet.

Comments about Today Sponge Vaginal Contraceptive, 3 ea:

I read a ton of reviews before deciding to give the sponge a try. It seems like people either hate it or love it. Since it's the only method my husband and I haven't tried over the decades, we gave it a shot. We're using it a back-up method, along with withdrawal and fertility awareness. I realize it's not as effective because I've had children, so we would never use it as our sole method. I assume it's also much easier to use because I've had kids, because it was effortless. Took about a minute to put it in and a couple seconds to remove. We didn't think it had a bad taste at all, and the slight numbing was no big deal. I experienced no irritation or discomfort. And even though my husband said he could feel it, it didn't really interfere with the experience. Basically, we think it's a thousand times better than a condom.

Comments about Today Sponge Vaginal Contraceptive, 3 ea:

This has been the best alternative to tube tying and not having a prescription for hormone-based products. It is easy to insert, and once you have learned how to apply Kegel-type techniques to push the sponge to a place where you can get hold of the band, it's really not hard at all to get out. I especially like the length of time one can leave in so multiple encounters can be had with one sponge. There is a time limit (30 hrs. after insertion) but that can be plenty of time if you plan for it. :)

I did not like this sponge one little bit. I found it a little bit difficult to insert, and VERY difficult to remove. I had to have my husband help me get it out. Talk about unsexy! It's big, odd and uncomfortable. I will not use one again, and I will not recommend it to others. Yuck!

I bought this because my boyfriend and I who hate condoms were planning a romantic night at a hotel the day i happened to be ovulating. I thought this would work perfectly because I have bad reactions to hormones/the pill. The box came with 3 and we had to use all 3 that night because the first one slipped out of place, the second one 'exploded' covering us both in foamy spermicide, and the third one was causing discomfort and burning. a day later and I developed a yeast infection that has lead to a UTI. The romantic night was also ruined because we had to run out to a 24hr pharmacy to get Plan B. I wouldn't use this again.

Comments about Today Sponge Vaginal Contraceptive, 3 ea:

I cannot use hormonal birth control, yet my husband and I are not ready to have kids. This somewhat limits our options. I like that these sponges provide some spontaneity, as they can be left in for 24 hours. Also, they seem to work just fine. We've haven't had any pregnancies while using them, which is the most important thing.

What I don't like about the sponges is the insertion and removal process. I've gone through 2 boxes of these now and I cannot, for the life of me, get one in unless I've had a couple drinks. I guess I'm just not relaxed enough normally. But in my defense, the thing is like a huge donut that is delicate and has to be positioned perfectly. It is beyond awkward. On my first attempt, the sponge got torn apart, had to be tossed, and we ended up using a condom instead. After my first successful sponge use, I had a horrible time getting it out the next morning. The "strap" was nowhere to be found and I had to use the "bear down" method to get it out. It took a considerable amount of time and many unsuccessful tries. I was getting panicky thinking about the humiliation of seeking medical assistance in such a matter. Thankfully, it finally popped out. I now don't bother with the strap, and just use the bear down method each time.

My final criticism is that my husband did get some pretty nasty chafing from the elastic strap/ loop the last time we used one. I don't know if the sponge wasn't positioned properly or what, but he was less than thrilled.

Overall, these are okay. If they were cheaper, I'd buy them more often. For now, I prefer to buy Conceptrol spermicide in pre-filled applicators. They're messier and lack the spontaneity of sponges, but they're cheaper and much easier to use.

My husband and I have used the sponge for several years now. I would rather pay a little more for hormone free birth control than use the pill anyday. There are no side effects or increase risks for cancer when using the Sponge! We love the sponge! I am a nutritionist and have researched the effects of using birth control such as nutritional deficiency's, candida and possible cancers. It's just not worth it, try the sponge!
