Chemical Name: TRIAMTERENE (trye-AM-ter-een) and HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (hye-droe-klor-oh-THYE-a-zide)

Common uses for Triamterene-Hctz
Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg is a potassium-sparing and thiazide diuretic combination used to treat high blood pressure and swelling due to excess body water. It may be also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before using Triamterene-Hctz
WARNING: Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg can increase potassium levels in your body. This is more likely to occur in people with kidney problems, diabetes, in elderly patients, or if the patient is severely ill. Potassium levels must be closely monitored, especially in people with any of these problems or illnesses. If not treated, high potassium levels can be fatal. Lab tests will be required, so be sure to keep appointments. If you develop burning, numbness, or tingling; muscle weakness; tiredness; or an irregular heartbeat, notify your doctor right away. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg if you are also taking dofetilide, a salt substitute containing potassium, another medicine that contains triamterene, an aldosterone blocker (eg, eplerenone), or another potassium-sparing diuretic (eg, amiloride, spironolactone). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking potassium supplements, amphotericin B, corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), corticotrophin (ACTH), chlorpropamide, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen, indomethacin), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, enalapril), certain chemotherapy medicines, diazoxide, digoxin, lithium, anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), methenamine, or medicine for high blood pressure. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including cirrhosis or liver problems; diabetes; gout; kidney problems; heart failure; lupus; dehydration; high blood acid levels; low folic acid levels; blood electrolyte problems; allergies, including if you have had an allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness) to a penicillin antibiotic (eg, amoxicillin); pregnancy; or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are on a low-salt (sodium) diet, or if you have a history of kidney stones or irregular heartbeat. USE OF TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have severe kidney problems or high blood potassium levels, or if you are unable to urinate. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg.

Directions for Triamterene-Hctz
Follow the directions for using Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg provided by your doctor. TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg MAY BE TAKEN WITH FOOD if it upsets your stomach. TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg MAY CAUSE an increase in urine or in frequency of urination. To prevent this from affecting sleep, if you are taking 1 dose daily, take it in the morning after breakfast. If you are taking more than 1 dose, take the last one no later than 6 pm, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. IF YOU TAKE CHOLESTYRAMINE OR COLESTIPOL, ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take it with Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg. STORE TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. KEEP TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg out of the reach of children and away from pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Cautions for Triamterene-Hctz
DO NOT TAKE TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg if you have had an allergic reaction to it, to any ingredient in this product, or to any other sulfonamide medicine (eg, sulfamethoxazole). An allergic reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg or if a certain medicine is a sulfonamide, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver function, kidney function, lung function, blood pressure, blood electrolyte levels (eg, potassium), and blood glucose levels, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg. TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg MAY AFFECT CERTAIN LAB TEST RESULTS. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you take Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg. Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg. Using Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun or sunlamps until you know how you react to Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg CONTAINS A SULFONAMIDE CALLED HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE, which can cause certain eye problems (myopia, angle-closure glaucoma). Untreated angle-closure glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss. If these eye problems occur, symptoms usually occur within hours to weeks of starting Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as vision changes (eg, decreased vision clearness) or eye pain. IF VOMITING OR DIARRHEA OCCURS, you will need to take care not to become dehydrated. Contact your doctor for instructions. DO NOT USE A SALT SUBSTITUTE or potassium supplement without checking with your doctor. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU BECOME PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg during pregnancy. TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.

Possible side effects of Triamterene-Hctz
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg include dizziness or lightheadedness when standing or sitting up, nausea, diarrhea, or headache. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg MAY RAISE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR. High blood sugar may make you feel confused, drowsy, or thirsty. It can also make you flush, breathe faster, or have a fruit-like breath odor. If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor right away. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience burning, numbness, or tingling; confusion; decreased urination; drowsiness; dry mouth; excessive thirst; eye pain; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; mental or mood changes; muscle cramps, pain, or weakness; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; restlessness; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness; shortness of breath; sluggishness; stomach pain; tiredness or weakness; tremor; unusual bruising or bleeding; vision changes (eg, decreased vision clearness); vomiting; or yellowing of the skin or eyes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to Triamterene-Hctz 50-25mg is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. If you take too much Triamterene-Hctz

PATIENTS WHO TAKE MEDICINE FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE often feel tired or run down for a few weeks after starting treatment. Be sure to take your medicine even if you may not feel "normal." Tell your doctor if you develop any new symptoms. DO NOT SHARE TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg for other health conditions. IF USING TRIAMTERENE-HCTZ 50-25mg FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out. CHECK WITH YOUR PHARMACIST about how to dispose of unused medicine.
