Unisom is in my opinion the very best OTC sleep aid medication out there.
1. it is not habit forming
2. its cost is reasonable
3. capsule are small in diameter making it easy to swallow
4. tasteless, odorless
5. Not hypnotic
6. No morning drowsiness and no unpleasant side effects.

Draw back:
It appears to take a little longer to be metabolized following post-consumption, I would say between 30-55 minutes for the regular user.

To my surprise, the Unisom "softgel" doesn't work as well as the "tablet". You wouldn't think so because gels tab dissolve faster but this formula isn't as effective as the original. Also I don't care what the instructions state on the box, please take the Unisom "tablet" at least 90 minutes before going to bed because otherwise you will be a zombie in morning.

I take Unisom just before I go to bed - it helps me go to sleep faster and stay asleep.

Unisom is the ONLY product that works for me. I have tried a lot of the prescriptions from my Dr and all the OTC pills available. As a previous reviewer said - it really does slow the thoughts that tend to pile up as soon as I lay my head on the pillow.

This product will work fast depending on how much food is in your stomach. Plan on taking it accordingly. It takes about an hour to work on a full stomach. Sometimes if there is too much food in the stomach, it loses its strength to make me fall asleep. It will take about 20 minutes on an empty stomach. I tend to think a lot before I go to sleep and this product slows down my thoughts while making me go to sleep. I dont wake up groggy.

I have used this on occasion. Once I get to sleep it will keep me there for 8 or more.

Everyone should know the differences between this and the 25mg Unisom tabs. The 25mg tabs use doxylamine succinate. That's the active sedating ingredient in Nyquil. The advantage of the tabs is you can just take a portion and see if that helps.

These 50mg softgels have diphenhydramine, the same sedating ingredient as Benadryl.

Personally I much prefer the 25mg tablets, but both will help you get a sleep. Both may leave you a little groggy. Neither should be taken all the time because both are anticholinergic (but the effect reverses once you stop taking them).

Again I would only suggest them to anyone for occasional use.

Unisom works pretty well, though it is better at keeping you asleep once you get there than making you sleepy.

50mg is a VERY hefty dose, and not necessary at all. I normally use half of a 25mg tab and it works fine. I'd rate the 25 mg (48 tabs) package 5 stars.

My husband and I have used Unisom for years and really like the Sleep Gels. They seem to work better than any thing else we have tried.
