I've tried a bunch of luxury shave products since I began shaving my head a few years ago. A year or two ago I got several bars of this stuff, but didn't really like the scent (even though it's fairly subtle), so put it aside.

However, I recently stumbled across the fact that the VDH shave soaps can be easily melted in the microwave (one or two 10-second bursts, checking for consistency after each time), and a teaspoon or so of your favorite cologne stirred in.

So I use a 1-cup size (XS) ZipLoc storage container, put in a puck of VDH Deluxe or Glycerine shave soap, nuke until just melted, stir in a tsp of cologne, and let it set up again. I then can use the lid to keep it from drying out too much if it sits for more than a day.

(Bonus tip: If you can find the 1/2 cup size container, use a half puck and 1/2 tsp. cologne to make a great travel-size option - especially when used with a smaller badger brush like the Tweezerman.)

This is the soap I use the most. I have more expensive soaps but the Van Der Hagen Deluxe is the one I go to the most. Best value for the buck ive found in shaving soaps.

I've been using the VdH soaps on and off now for 6 months. I try more expensive products and keep coming back to the VdH Deluxe. It's just a great product that easily produces a very slick lather when loaded onto my Semogue boar brush. The only reason I don't give it five stars is the scent is just too muted for my tastes. I like mentholated soaps and creams so I took 2 cakes of VdH Deluxe and gently melted them in the microwave (in my very large shave mug). After the soap had cooled just a bit I added 5 mL (1 tsp) of peppermint extract. Wonderful aroma in the morming. Wakes me up and the menthol in the peppermint extract provides a nice cool feel. Perfect for the warmer weather already here.

This worked, and smells fine when I used it to shave my chest, and stomach hair, but when I shaved my face at the end I had about ten razor bumps in one area of my jaw. I don't know if it was my razor, or what, but it took about a week, and a half for them to go away, but still leaving spots lasting a month plus. That was my second shave ever, and first time trying wet shaving. I will not be wet shaving my face anymore.

The block of soap is to small for the standard mugs. I don't understand why you don't supply soap made by old spice or burma shave.

I have tried all three Van Der Hagen shaving soaps (Select, Deluxe, Glycerine) and they are ALL better than the many other brands of mug-and-brush cakes now available (or discontinued). They are a joy to use because they stay WETTER on the face. I can't say which one I like best... you can't go wrong with any of the three. Drop a cake in your mug, lather up with a hot, wet badger brush and fire away! NO REWETTING before finishing the shave!
