What Causes Eye Strain?



Tired, sore and dry eyes are increasingly common complaints for many. Eye strain and fatigue are frequently caused by the exposure to screens – computers, cell phones, television screens and electronic readers and other environmental irritants such as sun glare and pollution. Should I Take Eye Vitamins?



Eye supplements can provide relief of many eye symptoms including simple saline eye drop solutions to wash away irritating grit and allergy-causing pollen to compound formulas in eye drop or oral form. The National Eye Institute conducted a six-year-long Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), and its follow-up study called AREDS2. The results demonstrated that there was some reduction in vision loss for those who supplemented vitamins C, E, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc and copper due to dietary deficiencies.

Which Nutrients are Good For Eyesight?



Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc oxide, vitamin C and vitamin E, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, copper, chromium and manganese can help to maintain eye health and vision, even in the face of aging and the pressures of eye stress and disease. Each of these supplements is thought to potentially provide special benefits, from relief of dry eyes to strengthening poor night vision. Many supplements also include antioxidants, such as alpha lipoic acid, selenium and botanical extracts which may help protect against the damage of free radicals. These supplements do not replace multi-vitamins or other supplements and a health care professional should be consulted before beginning a program of supplements.

What Can I do About Tinnitis?



For tinnitus or ringing in the ear, both gingko and zinc supplements may be helpful but larger studies are still needed to establish efficacy. Both eardrops and oral supplements can be used to help soothe and potentially improve the condition of the ear canal and inner ear in some cases.

Supplements for Ear Ringing and Aches



The soreness, swelling and even aching pain of the infection in an ear canal can be impossible to ignore, especially in children. A pediatrician may suggest antibiotics in the event of an infection, as well as, recommend eardrops, which may be beneficial in bringing relief, and in promoting healing. There are also oral supplements for ear care which may be helpful with improving the health of the inner ears, and may offer potential relief of tinnitus (ringing of the ears) and/or sensitivity to sound and dizziness.
