I've been using the 2% solution, mostly the generic minoxidil, on the advice of a dermatologist for several years now. I wouldn't say my hair has become exactly thick, but there's definitely been a big improvement, and I hope to be able to stick with it. I've had a bit of an itchy scalp from the beginning, even with the 2% and using nonprescription Nizoral shampoo (also recommended by the dermatologist)., but never so bad as to be intolerable or to create dandruff. I solved the dripping on the face problem by always wearing a cloth headband as I apply the solution and for a few more minutes until it dries.
Recently, it's become harder and harder to find the generic 2% solution in the store, and drugstore.com seems to have dropped it too, so I've started looking around for an alternative. Of course, I'm reluctant to pay Rogaine prices, and since I'm finding lots of folks on the web who suggest that the 5% works better and is fine for women to use, I gave that a try, in both forms (foam and liquid). That's when the facial hair started. It's not terrible yet, but visible enough to be embarrassing, and the itchy scalp is becoming worse and starting to produce dandruff. I don't have a problem using the liquid, but the foam just seems to mostly stick in the hair with little of it actually getting down to the skin.
Naturally, I don't want to develop permanent facial hair, so I'm hoping to go back to the 2%, which was working just fine for me, if only it will continue to be available at an affordable price. Please, please drugstore.com???

On the recommendation of my dermatologist I have used the Men's formula instead of the Women's. After a bout with sudden, unexplained hair loss, a combination of Rograine for Men and biotin supplements (3000mcg a day) have produced dramatic results. After 4 months my hairdresser has also noticed a lot of regrowth. I am now down to once a day and have been able to maintain the regrowth. I don't understand why the women's formula which is half the strength costs the same as the men's. I have also tried the men's foam but find it difficult to control. If you are considering using this product ask your dermatologist about the men's formula.
I've been using this for 2 years and I'm very happy with the results. When I first started it I almost stopped. I had so much hair loss for the first 2 months+. It was longer than the box stated. Luckily it slowed and my hair grew in thicker. I was noticing my hair thinning for a couple of years, but wasn't really sure. Kept thinking it was nothing until after swimming one day I noticed more scalp than before. Thats when I knew I had to get serious. Both my parents have hair that has thinned as they've aged, so I knew that's what was happening to me. Only early 40s, but I guess that's common. All I can say is this stuff really works you just have to make it part of your morning and evening routine. Also know that the starting hair loss will freak you out but you'll get it all back. Good luck.
I am female and I ordered the Men's Formula.....it makes my scalp itch.....terribly. (So much that I had to stop using it!) Anyone got suggestions? Since the Women's Formula is 1/2 the strength of the Men's...wondering if I could dilute the Men's? Sterile Water, maybe? Thanks.
This is a great product! I started noticing hair growth in about 2 weeks. Not only was my bald spot covering but my hair was getting longer! I'm very pleased with this product & I will be purchasing more.
I started using Rogaine (with a Biotin supplement recommended by another reviewer) as directed on the top of my head about eight months ago to attempt to fill a very thin spot behind my bangs. I was using a powder every day to conceal two inches of visible scalp and plump up my thin skimpy bangs. Not only has it filled in the area but my hair looks 100% better. It is fuller, healthier, and easier to style. Three months ago I began using it on the sides and at the back of the neck where no hair grew and I am beginning to see the same results there that I had on the top of my head. A friend, who said her hair was transformed by Rogaine, encouraged me to stay with it by relating her experience that it took her over a year to see complete results. Patience and perseverance are real plusses with this product.
I started using Rogaine for women a little less than three months ago. Although the package said to expect to see results only after consistent use for four months, I noticed a difference by the end of the second month. My hair is much thicker, and you can really see where it's growing in along my hairline.
The biggest drawback for me has been coming up with a workable schedule for applying the Rogaine. It's supposed to be used twice a day, and you are to wait at least four hours before washing your hair. I ended up applying it when I got home at work around 6:00, and then again early in the morning, around 4:00! That way I could wash my hair by 8:00 and go to work. It would be nice if you only had to use it once a day. This product didn't leave my hair sticky, and I've found that I can go out in public without washing it, although it looks a little dull. After I've washed it, it looks great!
Somehow, lost most of my hair (braid used to reach my "tail-bone"). Dermatologist was of no help-"things happen"! Out of despiration, started using Rogaine May of 2010. My hair now (April 2011) reaches just past my shoulders, Slow going (normal for hair growth), but at least my scalp is covered and with patience, I'll have my braid again. Nuisance to have to do the treatment 2x a day, but sure beats the baldness I experienced. Instructions indicates that large bald spots "might not" be affected, but it certainly worked for me.
After I'd been using Rogaine twice a day for about six months the thin spots on the top of my head filled in. I have begun using it on the sides and back of my head which after two months are showing some improvement. My hair feels and looks fuller and healthier. I plan to continue using it especially after talking to a friend who has used it for several years and is thrilled. She told me it takes at least a year before hair fills in completely but well worth staying with it.
Apply one mL with dropper 2 times a day directly onto the scalp in the hair loss area
Using more or more often will not improve results
Continued use is necessary to increase and keep your hair regrowth, or hair loss will begin again

In clinical studies of mostly white women aged 18-45 years with mild to moderate degrees of hair loss, the following response to 2% minoxidil topical solution was reported: 19% of women reported moderate hair regrowth after using 2% minoxidil topical solution for 8 months (19% had moderate regrowth; 40% had minimal regrowth). This compares with 7% of women reporting moderate hair regrowth after using the placebo, the liquid without minoxidil in it, for 8 months (7% had moderate regrowth; 33% had minimal growth).
